Why We're Crossing

Most years, we get together in August for an open water swim across Penobscot Bay, but 2020 is different in so many ways and that holds true for iX2020. While we won't be gathering together as we usually do in Northport and Islesboro, we're holding a physically distanced virtual edition of the event where participants will create their own crossing.

Each year, and this year is no different, the Islesboro Crossing attracts swimmers from across the country to raise funds for LifeFlight of Maine, a nonprofit organization and the state's only emergency medical helicopter service. Whether you're swimming, paddling, volunteering, sponsoring or donating, this fundraiser will challenge and inspire you.

At LifeFlight, we believe that everyone in Maine has the right to lifesaving critical care, and we know that every minute counts.  With more than one million people spread across a vast state, providing critical care transport is an expensive proposition. When we all work together, however, we can bridge the miles to save lives.

Because of your work and dedication, we’ve moved even closer to our goal of purchasing two new helicopters to replace our oldest models, Echo Mike and Charlie Mike. We've purchased specialized medical equipment designed specifically to take care of seriously ill patients in the transport environment. We've offered advanced clinical training and education to emergency medical providers across the state. All of that means you're helping even more people in Maine (residents and visitors alike) get the critical care and transport they need, when they need it.
