Welcome to our Islesboro Crossing 2019 Team Fundraising Page!

On August 18, Team Chewonki will be completing the Islesboro Crossing for LifeFlight, swimming 3.1 miles across the Penobscot Bay from Northport to Islesboro to raise money for LifeFlight of Maine, our state's only emergency medical helicopter service. Everyone on our team is connected to Chewonki, whether as a current or former staff member, an alumni, or a parent of a participant. Chewonki's Farm Manager Megan Phillips was inspired to pull together Team Chewonki after hearing first-hand the account of KC Ford, a former Chewonki employee whose life was saved by a LifeFlight transfer after a small plane crash off Matinicus in 2011.

At Chewonki, we have a few days of the year when everyone sets aside their normal, day-to-day jobs and comes together to complete necessary, physical work to transition our campus in between program seasons. Each of these days - called Chewonki Day - is an opportunity to get done work that needs doing to keep this campus running, from stacking wood to moving around bunk beds in summer camp cabins. On a Chewonki Day a few years ago, KC and Megan were a part of a small group of folks painting a staff residence. As they painted, KC shared the story of her plane crash and the myriad folks and entities - LifeFlight included - that saved her life that day.

Swimming for LifeFlight is a bit like a Chewonki Day: folks hit pause on moving in their own direction and come together to be a part of something bigger that themselves and to contribute to work that needs doing. The Islesboro Crossing feels like an extension of the Chewonki mission, which highlights a connection to the natural world, transformative personal growth, and the building of a thriving, sustainable community. Living and exploring this mostly rural state, we feel grateful everyday to know that LifeFlight is a part of our broader thriving, sustainable community in Maine.

People who live in Maine and people who visit Maine—including Chewonki staff, participants, and friends—depend on LifeFlight to be there for them. We are comforted to know that they’ll be there for us, and for our friends and family, should the unthinkable happen.

Since 1998, LifeFlight has touched the lives of nearly 26,000 critically ill and injured people from nearly every community in Maine.

We're going all the way across that bay to support this important cause. Won’t you support it, too? You don’t even have to swim! Just click on the “donate” button. Any amount is greatly appreciated and will help us reach our goal.

Team Chewonki's goal is to raise $20,000 this year to support LifeFlight of Maine. Funds raised at this year’s swim will go toward the purchase of two new helicopters to replace the two that have served the people in Maine for the last 14 years.

Thanks so much for supporting our IX2019 team, and for supporting this critically important service.
